M24643/44

MIL-DTL-24643/44 LS3SF Shipboard Cable

Mil-Spec Military part number MIL-DTL-24643/44 has one cable-type designation: LS3SF. This shipboard cable is rated at 600 volts. Standard Identification Code by Method 2.  24643/44 cords use thermoset insulation and have an outer cross-linked polyolefin jacket (XLPO). LS3SF cables are comprised of three conductors in thermoset insulation to form a triad. Each triad is then enrobed in a braided shield of coated or uncoated copper, which is then insulated with either two cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) tapes or a single XLPE tape with an extruded clear jacket. The triads are then built into a cable by inserting the triads around a central filler per section 3.4.4 of MIL-DTL-24643. A triad is not to be used as the central filler. The entire assembly is jacketed in cross-linked polyolefin (XLPO). The cord is non-watertight and has a non-flexing service. It operates within a temperature range of -20°C to +90°C. These cables can be used within one or two continuous compartments, but are not permitted to penetrate bulkheads or watertight decks.

What does the cable designation LS3SF mean?

In the cable designation for LS3SF, the letters LS refer to low smoke and halogen-free cable. 2 refers to two conductors, S refers to shielded, and J refers to Jacketed.

M24643/44 Construction:

  • Conductors: Coated or uncoated copper, per ASTM B8
  • Insulation: Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE)
  • Shield: Each triad within a braided shield of tin-coated copper
  • Jacket: Low-Smoke, Halogen-Free (LSZH) Cross-Linked Polyolefin (XLPO) with surface markings

M24643/44 Ratings and Approvals

  • Mil-Spec:
    • MIL-DTL-24643
    • MIL-I-45208A
    • MIL-STD-790
  • Navy Shipboard Spec: LS3SF
  • ASTM B8
  • Voltage Rating: 600V

Features and Benefits of M24643/44 Cords

  • Non-watertight
  • Thermoset insulation is ideal for settings where durability and stiffness are essential
  • Cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation has a strong anti-deformation capability, even in high temperatures, and has lower dielectric loss than paper or PVC insulation.
  • LSZH jacket is fire resistant and emits low smoke, which is ideal for shipboard settings which often have restricted ventilation
  • LSZH jackets also emit low acid, gas, and toxicity when subjected to fire, maintaining circuit integrity
  • Shielded cables tend to reduce electrical noise created by electromagnetic signals in the cable while also providing greater protection and durability compared to unshielded cables.
